ATASCADERO, Calif. — October 31, 2026. The City of Atascadero is preparing a final City Council vote on changes to its zoning code and map, intended to bring local development rules into alignment with the 2045 General Plan adopted in September.
According to the city’s zoning update page, the final second reading is scheduled for November 10, 2026. If the ordinance is adopted that day, the city says the updated zoning code and map would take effect December 10.
What is changing?
The city says its updated General Plan uses new land-use categories called Placetypes, which must be reflected in the zoning code. The review also aims to clarify regulations, make applications easier to understand and address newer state land-use laws.
Residents and business owners can review draft code language and zoning-map changes on the city’s website. A neighborhood’s future zoning can affect uses permitted on land, but a code change alone is not a building permit for a specific property.
What has not happened yet?
A scheduled final vote is not a completed final vote. Anyone purchasing property or preparing an application should check the final adopted ordinance and its effective date rather than assume every draft provision is law already.
