Atascadero Public Safety Facilities Project Begins with Fire Station 2 and Police Dispatch Work

ATASCADERO, Calif. — Construction is underway on the first phase of a multi-stage effort to improve the city’s emergency-service facilities. In an announcement dated May 12, 2026, the City of Atascadero said work had begun on renovations to Fire Station No. 2 and construction of a new police dispatch building.

Why the city is investing

Atascadero describes the Public Safety Facilities Project as the result of several years of planning and community discussion. Its wider program includes replacement or renovation of Fire Station No. 1, Fire Station No. 2 and facilities used by the Police Department. Officials say the purpose is to improve operations, energy efficiency, coordination and working conditions for emergency personnel.

What is confirmed — and what is not

The city announced a ceremonial start and the first construction phase. That does not mean all planned buildings have been finished, that future phases are fully funded or that service changes have been announced for a particular neighborhood. Those questions depend on project schedules, contracts and subsequent council decisions.

Residents can follow council meeting documents and city project announcements for expected construction impacts, final costs and opening dates. Emergency calls should continue through existing official channels; construction of a dispatch facility does not change the emergency number 911.
